Today you’ll notice that it’s just me. The reason for that is I’ve had quite a few people over the last few seasons ask how I would answer the questions that I always ask my guests. So today, I thought I would interview myself and answer those questions for you.
I hope you enjoy the conversation, and I hope you learn a little bit more about me as well.
Hello and welcome to The True North Show. I’m your host, Megan North. I am a purpose finder, mental health professional, and guide for those ready to return to who they truly are.
Here, we explore what it means to live a life led by purpose, alignment, and deeper inner truth. Through real conversations, powerful reflections, and soul-led strategies, we uncover the stories, tools, and insights that help you navigate life’s crossroads and find your own true north.
So whether you’re in the middle of a transformation, seeking clarity, or just curious about what’s next, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive in. Your path starts now.
What was the defining moment that led me to pursue my true passion and purpose?
I had a 20-plus year career in HR. My first career was as a legal secretary, which I did for 12 years before stepping into the HR space. I’m the youngest of six children, so I’ve always been curious about people. I’ve always wanted to understand more about them.
I’m very good at being in spaces with people, reading the room, and understanding where someone is at. So stepping into HR made sense, and I was in that space for over 20 years.
As you can see behind me, I have a lot of oracle cards. I’ve always been very spiritually intuitive. About 15 years ago, I started doing readings for myself, then for friends. About 10 years ago, someone said to me, “You should really do this and have people pay you for readings.”
So I set up a little business, a side hustle as most people call it. I started doing readings and also offering energy healing, all while still working in the corporate world.
As I moved into more senior roles, I loved my job, but it wasn’t filling me with passion or purpose anymore. I wanted to wake up every day and do what I truly wanted to do. I also wanted to work with people I chose, manage my own diary, take time off when I wanted, and not ask permission.
About four and a half years ago, I decided to step into my own space. It was a huge decision. I was working in a very large organisation and was about to be made permanent. The defining moment was deciding whether I committed to that role or finally found the courage to move into my own business.
One senior leader said to me, “I can’t believe you’re doing this. You’re so brave.” And I remember thinking, actually, yes, I am brave. I just needed to do what felt right for me.
How do I balance and prioritise my mental wellbeing while pursuing my dreams?
This is really important. When you work for yourself, you could work 24/7 if you let yourself. Boundaries are essential.
I’m very firm with my boundaries around time and my diary. Unless I choose to work odd hours or weekends, my diary is blocked. If I’m working with someone overseas, we agree on what works, but it’s always my choice.
I’m an energy healer, so I do a lot of energetic work on myself. I also work with other energy healers because sometimes you need help getting out of your own way.
I have a beautiful office with a big window looking out to trees and greenery. Sometimes I’ll take my glasses off and just look out the window for a couple of minutes to reset.
Standing in the sun, or even in the cold, really helps. And sometimes doing nothing is exactly what I need. I actually get inspired when I’m bored.
Just recently, I took a long weekend and truly switched off. I was sitting on the lounge with a cup of tea, watching The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down, and suddenly I felt inspired to write an ebook. When my mind empties, inspiration arrives.
Being bored isn’t a bad thing. It’s when my nervous system rests and my clarity returns.
Can I share a significant challenge and how I overcame it?
The first two years in business were very slow, especially financially. I stepped out of a well-paid corporate role into a business with very little income.
I took on HR consulting contracts to earn money, but every time I did, I lost momentum in my business. I’d work hard for three or four months, then need time to recover before I could refocus.
At the beginning of 2024, I made a firm decision to stop HR consulting altogether. My husband was incredibly supportive, which I’m very grateful for.
The hardest part wasn’t the money. It was that I wanted to help people and wasn’t reaching enough of them yet. There were moments when I wanted to quit and go back to HR full-time, but my husband kept saying, “Just hold on.”
I did, and I’m really glad I did.
Has my path evolved over time?
Absolutely. When I first started, I had two businesses. One focused on oracle cards and healing, and the other on coaching and mental wellbeing workshops.
Last year, during a healing session with a woman in the US, she pointed out that calling myself “the overwhelm coach” might actually make people feel more overwhelmed. That insight changed everything.
I realised I needed to bring my two worlds together. I dissolved both business names and relaunched as Megan North. It was a big decision, but it allowed me to show up holistically and authentically.
I still pivot and change. Sometimes I explore an idea and realise it’s not right, and I let it go. That’s the freedom of running your own business.
What practices help me stay grounded?
Breathing is huge. Even stopping for one conscious breath can reset my nervous system.
Looking out the window, standing in the sun or the cold, feeling my feet on the ground, meditation, and simply being present all help me stay grounded.
With my clients, we don’t set goals. We run experiments. Goals can make people feel like they’ve failed if they don’t achieve them. Experiments remove that pressure.
Try something. If it doesn’t work, adjust. That’s how people find their rhythm and build self-trust.
What advice would I give someone starting to explore their purpose?
Be kind to yourself and be patient. When I first launched my business, I thought people would just appear. They didn’t.
Start small if you need to. Build something alongside your job if finances matter. You’ll reach a tipping point where you know when it’s time to choose.
Also, think carefully about your inner circle. Mine is very small. These people challenge me, support me, and tell me the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable.
How do I hope my story impacts others?
I hope it shows that there are no quick fixes. I call BS on the idea that you can become wildly successful overnight.
Building trust takes time. Know, like, and trust matter. Many of my clients have known me for years before working with me.
Slow growth is real growth.
One lesson I wish I’d known earlier?
Ask more people more questions.
When I was younger, I didn’t use my voice enough. I didn’t ask for advice as often as I should have. I wish I’d been more confident to do that earlier.
So if there’s one takeaway, it’s this: ask, explore, and let yourself be supported.
Thank you for joining me on this episode of The True North Show. I hope it gave you something to think about and reminded you that your true north is never lost.
